This is not a book about that, but it was introduced in another book, so I will excerpt and quote it.
1. A state of strong worldly attachments and desires.
2. A stage of fighting and purifying oneself from worldly things.
3. Humility, detachment from worldly things, and spiritual comfort.
4. Mystical life, meditation, and occasional experiences of God.
5. A simple (not perfect) union with God.
6. A greater liberation from the worldly human self, and a higher union with God. Hearing the word of God and seeing the image of God with the spiritual eye.
7. A state where the heart and God become one.
(From "Honzan Hiro's Collected Works 1" P283)
Furthermore, this book also mentions the spiritual eye and spiritual vision that occur at this stage (P287-288). According to that, while the basic spiritual vision, which is imaginative manifestation, can occur even before the 6th stage, a more advanced spiritual vision, which is intellectual manifestation, only occurs from the 6th stage onwards.
With the basic spiritual vision of imaginative manifestation, one can see spiritual objects more clearly than with the physical body. On the other hand, with the more advanced spiritual vision of intellectual manifestation, one can feel the presence of Jesus Christ within one's own soul, even if one cannot see it with the physical eye or the spiritual eye.
This means that what is generally called "spiritual vision" does not rely on sight. When people talk about "spiritual vision," they often mean seeing images, but Saint Teresa defines it as a lower stage if one sees an image. She defines a higher degree as being in union with God.
According to the commentary in the same book, "seeing" implies a contrast between subject and object, and therefore a separation. In other words, there is a subject and an object.
On the other hand, in intellectual manifestation, the union between God and the soul (or heart) is deeper. Even at the stage where only the basic spiritual vision of imaginative manifestation occurs, there is a certain degree of union, but at the stage where intellectual manifestation occurs, that union is deepened. In terms of spiritual sensitivity, at the stage of imaginative manifestation, the power received is still weak, but when intellectual manifestation occurs, one feels a power that shakes the soul to its core.
Also, at the stage where only imaginative manifestation occurs, the unconscious part of the human self may feel like it is God or something spiritual, whereas at the stage where intellectual manifestation occurs, there is only the pure manifestation of God's will.
...Interpreting this content, it seems that at the stage of reaching the 6th stage, only imaginative manifestation occurs, and intellectual manifestation has not yet occurred, and therefore, the union with God is still insufficient, and the unconscious part of one's own self may be perceived as God-consciousness. On the other hand, at the 6th stage or the 7th stage, the union between God and oneself has progressed to a considerable extent, and as a result, whether or not one sees an image, the consciousness of God and oneself is united.
When viewed this way, the hierarchical structure of Christianity also seems to have fundamental similarities with Yoga and Buddhism, and there appear to be many common points.
Furthermore, the book also mentions that one should continue efforts and practice not just at the stage of psychic abilities, but towards ultimate unity. This is also a Yogic perspective, and it is often said that psychic abilities are a result that accompanies enlightenment, and that one should seek enlightenment rather than psychic abilities.
The purpose of spiritual practice is to achieve ultimate oneness, which is a harmonization with this world itself, and the ultimate existence. Therefore, psychic abilities, which are in the process, can be considered trivial.
As for me, I am basically at level 4, but not quite at level 5. Level 6 and beyond seem to be for the future.
When applying this to a Yogic or Theosophical framework, I interpret it as follows:
- 1 is the physical world.
- 2 to 4 are the astral realm (emotions are dominant), with 2 being the lower astral realm, 4 being the upper astral realm, and 3 being in between.
- 5 to 6 are the causal realm.
- 7 is Purusha.
So-called spiritual things, or psychic abilities, are likely in the astral realm, from 2 to 4, or perhaps some parts up to 5.
On the other hand, at level 6, one moves away from abilities and, from a certain perspective, enters a life or state of consciousness that is "liberated" or "detached from the world."
At level 7, one can say that one has attained liberation.
The state of stillness appears at each stage, such as the state of stillness between 1 and 2, the state of stillness between 2 and 3, instability between 3 and 4, and so on, with the state of stillness deepening from 4 to 5, 5 to 6, and 6 to 7.
That is my interpretation.
