The interpretation of what "god" is varies depending on the school of thought. Some understand "god" as an absolute being, equivalent to a state of enlightenment, while others believe that being "god" and being enlightened are separate things.

This is something that is familiar and easy to understand for Japanese people. For example, a respected person can become a deity, but it is not necessarily true that that person was enlightened. Many figures, such as Sugawara no Michizane and many warriors, are enshrined as gods, and in those cases, whether or not they were enlightened is rarely questioned.

The Greek gods were very human-like, and the Hindu gods of India are generally interpreted as not being enlightened.

In the Indian philosophical system, gods are like high-ranking positions that are successively occupied by various souls. However, none of them are completely perfect. "Raja Yoga" (by Swami Vivekananda).

According to the concept of yoga, one can choose to become a god when they reach a state worthy of becoming a god, but if they choose not to become a god and aim for a higher state, they can reach enlightenment.

This is because, by becoming a god, one can gain a position of controlling a part of this world, but at the same time, it can hinder the path to enlightenment.

This is stated in the Yoga Sutras, which is a classic text. Therefore, for those who practice yoga, gods are seen as pioneers of a high position, but not as enlightened beings. They respect the gods, but generally take a position of trying to go beyond the gods to reach a higher level.

However, even getting close to a god is a difficult task, so it is not easy to reach a level higher than a god. This also has a metaphorical aspect, and it seems to be a teaching that encourages people to devote themselves to practice without being tainted by worldly desires.

In addition, the concept of non-attachment is emphasized. By practicing non-attachment, one can even reject the demands and expectations of the gods, and thus reach a higher level.
