It seems that such misunderstandings are widespread in the spiritual industry. Specifically, the following are common misconceptions:
- The higher self is common to all people and has the same qualities.
- The higher self is perfect.
- The personality of the higher self is the same for everyone.
- The higher self is infallible and guiltless, a completely correct state.
- The higher self is a being that supports and guides us.
- The higher self is the original source from which we came, and the place to which we return after we are born.
There are various misunderstandings, some of which seem correct and others not, and as a result, further misunderstandings arise, such as "connecting with the higher self will solve everything."
First of all, whether the "higher self" being discussed here refers to one's own spirit, or a part of one's soul that separated from the group soul before birth, or whether the higher self refers to the group soul itself, the meaning varies greatly depending on the context.
■Context
- As an individual
- As a collective consciousness
Specifically, the following are possible interpretations:
- The higher self is one's own spirit (either the current spirit that transcends time and space, or the spirit that interacts from other timelines or parallel universes).
- The higher self is a being (spirit) that separated from the same group soul as oneself. It is different from oneself, but it is still considered "oneself" because it originates from the same source.
- The higher self refers to the group soul itself (a collective consciousness that has a large individual consciousness, which can be considered an individual, but is the source from the perspective of a soul fragment).
Therefore, whether the term "higher self" refers to an individual spirit or a group soul makes a significant difference. However, in most cases, it refers to an individual spirit, so I will focus on that for now. Also, whether a spirit is an individual or a collective consciousness depends on the perspective, and it is not entirely wrong to consider everything as an individual. From a certain perspective, it may feel like a collective consciousness, but at the same time, it is also an individual consciousness.
From that perspective, the "higher self" is ultimately just one spirit, and what each person recognizes as their higher self is their own spirit. And the perception varies depending on the individual's state.
First, there is a state where the lower-level consciousness of the physical body and the higher self are not unified. When a person is in an unawakened state of consciousness, their spirit and body may be "disconnected," or even overlapping without truly merging, as if being observed from above. This indicates a separation on a spiritual level, with a clear manifestation of the physical state of consciousness, and a lack of understanding of spiritual matters. This is why it is referred to as "separation" in spiritual terms.
In such cases, recognizing the higher self as a separate entity has two possibilities:
- The individual's own spirit.
- A spirit that has separated from the same group soul (sometimes referred to as a guide).
On the other hand, when a certain level of spiritual growth is observed, and the higher self, which is the individual's spirit, is aligned and unified with the body, the higher self spirit resides within oneself.
At this time, the individual's spirit is not outside, so if the higher self is felt externally, the remaining possibility is:
- A spirit that has separated from the same group soul (sometimes a guide).
Therefore, if something can be recognized externally as the higher self, it is not the individual's own spirit, but rather a spirit that has separated from the same group soul, and it can be trusted, which is why it is sometimes called a guide.
This guide has various natures and purposes. If a spirit has decided to accompany someone as a guide before birth, it possesses wisdom, which includes all the plans made before birth. While the person in the physical body may not remember these things, the guide, which is a part of oneself, provides high intelligence and guidance. Therefore, even if something seems perfect from the perspective of the physical self, it is more like a guiding presence that leads towards a better path.
There are also other cases where the same spirit, belonging to oneself, may be involved across time. This involvement transcends not only the time axis but also space and parallel worlds. When someone fails at something or wants to change something, the spirit from the past or future may intervene in their choices. In such cases, it is the same spirit as oneself, but it intervenes in one's life from the outside.
By understanding this, the misunderstandings mentioned earlier can also be resolved.
- The Higher Self is an individual spirit, so rather than saying that everyone "has" one, it is the "I" itself. Therefore, each one has different qualities.
- The Higher Self is a spirit, but it is not perfect.
- The Higher Self is an individual spirit, so the personalities are all different.
- The Higher Self is an individual spirit, so it also contains errors and mistakes (the idea that everything is correct when viewed as a whole is a separate matter).
Furthermore, the Higher Self, which has the nature of a guide, is not a perfect being, so even its guidance may be wrong. However, it has a perspective that transcends time and space, which the physical self does not, so it is a being that is far more wise than the physical self.
As for whether there is always a guide accompanying you, it is certain that for some people, it is always there. However, I am not certain whether there is definitely a guide. This is because, if someone has a mission, a spirit with the same origin as themselves will act as a guide from the time of birth. However, if not, there probably isn't a guide accompanying them. I am not certain about this, but I think that if someone is simply wandering as an individual spirit and playing in this earthly world without a particular reason, there is probably no guide accompanying them.
Separately, there is a team of guides, which is a being that watches rather than constantly looking at people, and this is sometimes referred to as a guide. However, the guides in that team are not necessarily of the same origin as the individual's spirit, so I think that the guide as the Higher Self is not necessarily always there.
Even in such cases, the intervention of one's own spirit that transcends time and space sometimes occurs, and at such times, humans on Earth feel the will of higher spirits.
Now, by understanding this, misunderstandings about various concepts of the Higher Self that are often mentioned in spiritual circles can also be resolved.
For example, there is sometimes a statement heard in spiritual circles, such as "It is a problem because you are not connected to your Higher Self," as if being connected to the Higher Self would solve everything. Indeed, for people who are separated from their own spirit, such a thing can be said. However, even if you are connected to your Higher Self, it is only a connection to your own spirit, and that is not the end, but rather the beginning.
Some YouTube gurus or spiritual teachers who claim to be psychic or channelers may not understand these things, and yet, they jokingly mock the strange behavior of others and say things like, "That person is not connected to their higher self," to gain views, and they spread the misconception that the higher self will solve everything.
In a state where spiritual awareness is lacking, the ego (which is called ahankara in yoga) is dominant, and in that state, one is misperceiving what is the self. While it is necessary to correct the mistake and return to one's higher self (which is the spirit), and to connect with it, it does not mean that everything is completed just by that.
Therefore, connecting with the higher self is just one step in the early stages of spirituality, and the higher self does not have all the answers. If one has a mission, guidance in the sense of a guide is very useful. If not, the higher self is essentially one's own spirit, and if that is the case, its wisdom is limited.
The story is simpler: individual spirits are exploring this world and acting with their own intentions. Even if one of those spirits finds higher love, it does not necessarily mean that each individual spirit (which is the higher self) has reached higher understanding and love.
Connecting with one's own spirit is a fundamental premise of spirituality in relation to the ignorant life on Earth, but even if one does not connect, there are many things that can be understood by living in such a state of separation. And experiencing such ignorance itself becomes "knowing," which can be very important. If one remains only in that state, they will remain in a cycle of reincarnation, repeating desires and consumption. It is necessary to awaken spiritually and go beyond that, but there is also a certain meaning to the ignorant life on Earth.
Through each experience, one learns, connects with the higher self, and sometimes fulfills a mission, and if not, one continues to explore as an individual higher self.
Some people will discover the spiritual aspects of this world in that process, but that is something the higher self should originally know, but the wisdom is different for each, and if one dispels the misconception that the higher self is a universal being, what remains is ultimately an individual spirit, and the nature of this world is a collection of stories in which each individual's higher self, which is the spirit, continues to explore and reach the truth.
